Matches LaTeX vertical space for the paired line gap modifier: \vspace{length}, \vspace*{length}, \addvspace{length}, \smallskip, \medskip, \bigskip and \vfill, and the length of a \\[length] line break, whose line it breaks as well.
Remarks
Space at the start of a line opens between that line and the one above, and in the middle of a line below that line, as LaTeX puts it. Negative lengths pull the lines together. Lengths take a 10pt body as 1em; one relative to the page, such as \fill or \textheight, adds nothing, as \vfill does. A command standing alone on its line takes the line with it. A \\ breaks no line before a block, before the end of an environment or right after the end of a block other than a display, as with LatexTextRule, which reads every \\ without a readable length; its length still opens space there. Pair it with LineGapModifier.
